Charlton Athletic Football Club

Charlton Athletic Football Club also known as “The Addicks” is a professional club based in Charlton, London Borough of Greenwich, England. This club was established in June, 1905 with the help of several youth clubs in the Southeast London area including East Street Mission and Blundell Mission who combined to form the Charlton Athletic Football Club.

The club based at The Valley, Charlton since 1919. During1985-92, it was based at Crystal Palace and West Ham United. In 1920, Charlton officially turned professional and in 1921, entered the League Cup. Since then it has experienced four top periods 1936-57; 1986-90; 1998-99 and 2000-07.The most historical period was during 1930’s when the highest finishes were recorded including 1937 runner-up. The club successfully reached the FA Cup after World War II. The club was relegated in 2008-09.

Actually, the 15 to 17 years boy has formed the club. Now this area is no more residential and near to the Thames Barrier. Early days of the club were hampered due to the Woolwich Arsenal F.C., which use to be one of the largest clubs in the nation. Before World War I, Charlton use to play in local leagues. In 1913, Woolwich moved to Arsenal and Charlton got an opportunity to develop and became the senior side by joining the Lewis ham League. After war, they joined Kent League for one season in 1919-20. Walter Rayners is the first official manager of Charlton FC accepted by the southern league and played a single season (1920-21) before getting into the football league. Charlton played its first football league match against Exeter City in 1921 and won with 1-0. In 1923, Charlton merged with Cat ford South end to form a large team. In 1923-24, Charlton performed at The Mount Stadium and worn the colors of “The Enders” with vertical light and dark blue stripes. However, this move did not work and they turned back to their original traditional red and white color combinations.
